Brief Intervention for Substance Use Training

This workshop is designed to equip university and students' union staff with the skills and confidence needed to manage disclosures of student drug and alcohol use. It provides tools for assessing the specific risks individual students may face and guidance on appropriate follow-up support.​

The course covers:​

  • An overview of current research on student drug and alcohol use.​
  • Introduction to brief interventions.​
  • Training in motivational interviewing techniques, specifically tailored to conversations with students about drugs and alcohol.​
  • Guidance on using health assessment tools that can support discussions with students.​
  • Risk reduction and harm minimisation strategies.​
  • Providing support resources and referrals.​

By the end of this training, participants will feel confident in their ability to engage students in meaningful conversations about the risks associated with drug and alcohol use and will have practical tools to support students effectively in these discussion​

Who is this training for? This training is appropriate for both students’ union and university staff and provides the opportunity to connect with staff from other institutions who are working towards harm reduction approach to drug use.

When and where is this training taking place? The training will take place 14:00 - 16:00 on the 14th May 2025 with a comfort break included. The training will take place online.
