Preparing for Welcome Training

This workshop is designed to support universities and students' unions in integrating drug and alcohol-related initiatives into the welcome period for both new and returning students. It also aims to help participants understand how to effectively support students during this transitional period.​

The course covers:​

  • An overview of research on student drug and alcohol use.​
  • An exploration of the motivations behind alcohol and drug use during the welcome period.​
  • Examples of initiatives implemented by universities and students' unions during the welcome period to address student alcohol and drug use. ​

By the end of this training, participants will feel confident in planning their welcome period, hosting activities and engaging both new and returning students.​

Who is this training for? This training is appropriate for both students’ union and university staff and provides the opportunity to connect with staff from other institutions who are working towards harm reduction approach to drug use.

When and where is this training taking place? The training will take place 14:00 - 16:00 on the 18th June 2025 with a comfort break included. The training will take place online.
